The Geoboard is a fun tool that allows children to discover the world of spatial geometry. This way, children can learn complex concepts in an enjoyable way. The Geoboard helps them develop their cognitive functions and the manipulation of objects in space.
With a Geoboard, you will help your children grasp many concepts related to spatial geometry:
- making flat shapes
- concepts of translation
- rotation
- reflection on similarities
- coordination
- addition
- right angles
- pattern repetition
- classification
- scaling
- position
- area and perimeter
But a Geoboard goes much further than that! It’s not just about geometry and abstract concepts. A wooden Geoboard helps develop a taste for discovery and a love for manipulating objects.
Getting started with making a DIY Geoboard
You will need just a little bit of material to make your Geoboard with your children:
- 1 wooden board
- 1 wood drill
- 1 wood drill bit
- Some wooden sticks
- Rubber bands
With Aire, we took advantage of some time during the summer to make a wooden Geoboard in our workshop. Find our tutorial video. It’s the easiest way to see the entire making process. Don’t worry if you have little equipment at home! You don’t need to sand the wood with an electric sander, for example. We started with a scrap piece of wood that was in very bad condition. But on your side, you can use a higher-quality piece of wood. Just avoid splinters for the children.

However, we must warn you, it won’t be the same for your children. The whole point of a Geoboard lies in handling it, playing with physical elements.

Making a Geoboard with your children is giving yourself a fun and friendly moment. It’s an excellent way to create memories with them. And beyond that, creating a toy with your child will make that toy absolutely unique in their eyes. It’s an object of great sentimental value that they will keep close for a long time.
